I looked for a contact form on your site, so pardon me for putting this in the comments. Are you located in the Charlottesville area? If so I would be interested to talk with you about some potential contract-based work.

Hi Baron,
Here at Zmanda we see real life examples how DBAs either neglect or misunderstand backups. The more coverage this topic gets, the less pain DBAs will suffer. We developed a lot of expertise in backup and recovery of MySQL and we would love to contribute to your backup chapter. Drop me a line if interested.

We're referring to http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/OnlineBackup

Right now it's sort of a to-do note in the outline. We're not going to speculate about upcoming features, but if it's in an unreleased version (which it is at the moment, but it may change quite a lot before it's officially released) we'll write about it a little bit.

Hi,

Maybe it would be great to mention parallel dump and restore to speed those lengthy operations:

Mysqlpdump:
http://www.fr3nd.net/projects/mysqlpdump/

Mysqlprestore:
http://mysql-ha.com/2007/09/13/mysqlprestore-for-parallel-restores/

And the new 5.1 mysqlimport (which supports this feature).

Selective backups is a good topic to address in the scripting section. Right now I have mentioned it in a paragraph or two in "What to Back Up." Thanks for the topic.

Failover will be part of the High Availability chapter I think.

If you need advice right now on filesystem copies, check out Peter's blog post on <a href="http://www.mysqlperformanceblog.com/2006/08/21/using-lvm-for-mysql-backup-and-replication-setup/" rel="nofollow">backups with LVM</a>. It assumes some prior knowledge, but it's good advice.
