High Performance MySQL 2nd Edition is in production
Just a quick note to say we have reached the production stage of the book project. Production is the process of transforming our OpenOffice.org files into the final page layout using a professional typesetting program.
As you can probably guess, this is later than we would have wished. This also means we won’t have the book for sale at the upcoming MySQL Conference and Expo. We will have a display copy at the O’Reilly booth at the conference, and you will be able to pre-order the book at a discount at that booth. (Several details remain to be worked out — do not trust the Amazon.com information on the book, as it is a weird blend of the first and second editions).
The book is very, very good. You will not be disappointed. I can’t think of a credible way to explain how good this book is — it’s just very, very good. Better than anything else you’ve ever read on the subject. So good that you will not want to share, because you’ll want to have your own copy handy for frequent reference (I currently refer to the OpenOffice.org files several times a week myself, and I wrote them!). But I’ll let you see for yourself. Buy a copy for yourself, your boss, your coworkers, and your mom. And your cat.

As a modestly unbiased bystander I can say that Baron is absolutely correct. I had a chance to preview the book and it is very well written, comprehensive on each topic covered and covers and amazing range of topics. I will have a complete review of the book in the upcoming spring issue of MySQL Magazine that I am releasing on April the 15th.

I’m jealous Keith. Ever since I heard 2nd edition was going to be a completed re-write I was very excited. From the updates I’ve heard (from this blog) it sounds like it is going to be invaluable. I can’t wait!

Awesome news Baron (and Peter, Arjen, and all else involved). I for one will definitely be picking up a copy at the conference. Great stuff, and congrats. I know exactly what it feels like to finally get that last chapter through copyedit! :)
Cheers!

Congrats! I’m really looking forward to ordering one at MySQL Conf. Do you know if there are plans to make an electronic copy available with the purchase of the book (cd in the back, download coupon, etc)? Sometimes it’s very helpful to have a searchable softcopy on your laptop.

Dan, I asked the editor about this and O’Reilly’s opinion was that it is best as a simple printed book. They have been experimenting a lot with rough copies, electronic copies, etc etc but I don’t think they’ll experiment with this book.
I’m guessing it’ll be available on Safari though. I was rooting for a free subscription to Safari as an author, but I didn’t get one ;-)

Can’t wait to read it, especially if it’s even better than the first edition. I love the amount of actual real tests in the book, it really puts things in perspective.

Shame it will not be ready for the conf. I read it also and I can only agree with the boys, great book…
As for Safari, we have a corp subscription, I will have a look and let you know Baron…

The official URL is
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/9780596101718/
You can sign up to get an email when it’s available. Amazon does “pre-orders” but I seriously doubt that is what people want. They are not yet making a distinction between the first and second edition, and I think if you do that you’ll probably get a first edition.

Congratz! Writing a book is tough and takes a lot of time. I hope its a best seller in the technology category!
