"Don’t rely on your hosting provider for anything database-related, especially backups." Yup, that happened here. When I used to use shared hosting, the server got hacked, rm -rf'd and lost everything. No file nor database backups.. Lesson learnt: Take backups like there's no tomorrow, at least then you can work on getting everything back up and finding a new host.

I'm completely in agreement, though, time limitations can make it more.....difficult. We had a major e-tailer client change datacenters back in December, and on December 24th, they told us they needed to move their hardware to a different state, by December 31st. We pulled out the hardware we could spare, I flew out, worked for several days setting up hardware (and some hardware I needed didn't arrive on time). Nonetheless, we pulled it off with 5 hours of downtime, and 20% of the hardware we needed.

Wow! As one of the owners of BRIWorks, thank you for the kind words. We are collectively blushing.

When we started 8 years ago we never understood why people suffered extreme downtime during migrations. With high bandwidth at ISPs, great tools, careful planning, and smart people, migrations should be practically transparent to the end-user. It IS unacceptable for a multi-hour, let alone a multi-day outage. I feel for your client.

Cheers!
