High Performance MySQL Second Edition goes to press!
Today High Performance MySQL, Second Edition went to press. I’ve been working with the production team over the last couple of weeks, proofreading and checking the index and working with the artist who re-drew the illustrations.
I spoke to the production editor this morning and she told me the schedule is for the bound-book date to be the 16th of June. The official in-stock date is June 19th. I don’t know how many copies they’re printing for the first printing. But I think there have been a lot of pre-orders (rumors I’ve heard from my Amazon Affiliate account).
I cannot wait to hold my copy in my hands!

Is the traffic from purchase orders what caused the Amazon downtime today? I can’t wait to get the book.

You’re going to have an electronic version of this, right?
Don’t really want to have to check for paperback errata & updates when an electronic solution is simpler, faster and considerably easier on the environment.

We will have electronic errata, that I know for sure. But an electronic version of the book is out of my control, and I think when I asked about it the editor said they thought it was not the right thing to do. (They have done a lot of forecasting and other math.) However, I also recall him saying it WILL be available on Safari. So, I’m confused.

Welcome to the O’Reilly Author club, Baron!! I have already read the sample chapter, and it so happens that I’m heavily entrenched in a mysql performance/scaling project right now. So… good timing!
Do you have any word on how long it’ll take to get listed in Safari?
When O’Reilly said there would not be an electronic version, by the way, they meant that you won’t be able to go and pay some fee to download a PDF directly to your hard drive. That’s a different model from Safari, wherein you buy a subscription (or write a book and get a free subscription)and can read it online (you can’t download from safari either).
It seems to me that if someone is really concerned about the environment and being simple and fast, a Safari subscription is really a no-brainer. I, for one, like dead tree copies of things, but Safari has probably cut the number of books I buy physical copies of in half (more when you consider that you can get a whole bunch of publishers’ books through there, not just O’Reilly). So, I’m not a Safari salesperson, really, but I think Safari certainly does accomplish some environmental goals :)

(or write a book and get a free subscription)
Yeah, I asked about that and they wouldn’t give me one.

Just for the record, I don’t think this was intentional that they didn’t give us Safari accounts — I think it was just a matter of something falling through the cracks and not being noticed. They sent me an email about it and are giving me an account.
Things like this just weren’t important to follow up on while I was writing :-) I wouldn’t have had time to read anyway.
One of these days I’m going to flex the binding on my brand-new copy of TCP/IP network administration, too.
