I was having trouble: AT-LP2D turntable, Ubuntu 8.10 and audacity. As soon as I un-checked the “allow play-through while recording” everything worked.
I posted the URL for this page in my reply on http://www.linuxquestions.org. It’s tagged with: USB, Ubuntu, Turntable, Audacity.
Thanks again!

I own a small business in Seattle that transfers vinyl and tapes to digital format. We convert in bulk and have the capacity to convert 5,000 units a week. We have an automated system we run on so I pop in a tape and walk away. I clean a record, lay down the needle and move on. The computer does the audio trimming. We take pictures of the sleeves and then all the metadata – which includes artist, album and song info – is attached to each file. We have a pop and click filter we run on each album. You keep the rich, warm sound of vinyl but can put it on your iPOD and play it from your computer or in the car.

For example, we converted over 16,000 LPs for Santa Monica radio station KCRW. They said it woulda taken them 9 years to do it themselves. We did it in under 10 months. We are faster, cheaper and prove a higher quality than most people realize.

I just wanted to make sure you knew that something like what I do does, in fact, exist!

The Discwasher system performs well and is affordable. Automated machines exists too but better complement more expensive systems.

Clean discs will present with less noise and greater resolution.

Audacity has some noise filters that do the job, but once you hear what even the modestly priced stuff can do it becomes quickly evident that it’s got good value. It is my opinion that not even the most insanely expensive turntables will really help the sound of a record as much as a nice brush and some good algorithms will.

For converting LP and cassette tape in the past, I have worked with Sound Laundry and AudioGrabber (they can work together to pretty much automate the task). The results are insanely good.
