Mark, yes, I know -- but frankly it's not great. When I wrote the mk-query-digest TCP interpreter for the MySQL protocol I had to make corrections to it. Nothing replaces a good study of the source code.

PS
To avoid the wrong impression: the book is all around code samples from the MySQL source.
So, saying "doesn't go too deep" depends on one's point of view. In the preface the author expresses his concerns that the book may be too technical. It is *very* technical.
Point is, he manages to explain the issues while not being intimidating with the source. He doesn't quote the most complicated code that can be found. In this respect it "doesn't go too deep" - in a good manner.
