Status update on High Performance MySQL

with 11 comments

The third edition is nearly done. I’ve committed first drafts of all chapters, and all but one appendix. I need to do the last appendix and then rewrite the preface, which is a few days of work at my current pace. After that, it’s the usual tech review, copyediting, updates to figures, etc — and then it’s off to production.

I’m really pleased with this edition. I was planning on it just being a refresh of the second edition to reflect what’s new in MySQL-land, but it’s almost a complete rewrite. There’s a lot more focus on a logical approach throughout: what happens in the server, what are the limitations, why this matters, what are the practical consequences and applications, and therefore…. The “and therefore” is the real reason you buy a book such as this one.

  2. How does a person become a part of the technical review. I’d like to read your book and write a review for MySQLFanboy.com

  3. We’re going to production very soon, so there’s no more time for tech reviewers; but thanks for the offer!

  4. Thanks for the update, Baron. I’m definitely looking forward to getting a copy of the new book and hope you and your co-authors have a nice vacation planned after it is done.

  5. In my experience “nearly finished with first draft” is still a long way from “nearly finished”. Even so, I have trouble understanding how you are able to rewrite that thick book in this time! Congrats for reaching this milestone!

  6. I just committed the new preface to the Subversion repository, and that’s the last writing; so it’s done now.

I outlined in great detail before beginning to write, and the rest was gravy. I spent over 1000 hours on the second edition; I’ve spent about 10 weeks on this edition working 1 hour every morning, plus 4-8 hours every weekend. At an average of no more than 12 hours a week, that’s about 1/8th of the time the second edition took me. Outlining has been the key.

I’ll need to review the copyeditor’s changes, but that won’t be much work. There are a couple of simple new figures, too, but at this point all I have to do is say “ok” when the artist renders print-ready versions of them. I believe I really am done with the bulk of the work.
